RP to host global forum on migration
The Philippines is set to host a global forum on migration as it endeavors to address serious problems in the deployment of Filipino workers abroad.
The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said it will host the forum early next year, expected to be attended by about 500 delegates from 120 countries, who will discuss the problems of migration experienced by overseas Filipino workers.
DFA undersecretary Esteban Conejos considers the forum timely considering the spate of events involving migrant workers in various parts of the world.
He said many times the country felt shocked over the death of Filipino workers in war-torn areas abroad.
But he also said that the Filipino nation rejoiced after Sarah Dematera, a domestic helper, was freed from a Saudi Arabian jail after 15 years in death row. She was convicted and sentenced to death in 1992 for killing her employer. She was able to return home last Tuesday after she was forgiven by the Saudi Arabian King.
