Res Gestae
In need of miracles!
By majority votes, the people's choice will reign for three years. And, it could no longer be undone!
Except for the next twelve senators, the Comelec has already proclaimed the winners for local positions. For Iloilo City, Treñas-Mabilog tandem is a runaway winner. In my hometown (Zarraga), Brazas and Silveo were the people's champs.
Unlike Treñas and Mabilog who come from same party, I am skeptic of any progress that my beloved Zarraga could have under Brazas and Silveo who come from opposing parties. Same feeling sets in as I look into the results of the provincial race with Tupas and Suplico on the lead. And, what else would I feel seeing the latest unofficial results of quick counts with 4, 5 or 6 from the Genuine Opposition landing on Top 12?
Party affiliations of our political leaders may not guarantee good performance. But, I could hardly expect any better result for elected officials who, from the beginning, are in "enemies". We have to cross our fingers on this but I am feeling the next three years of the Senate (and Congress) would be nothing more than hullabaloos. If our votes would turn into curse, the Iloilo Provincial Capitol would be staging similar scenario in the next 3 years under Tupas and Suplico!
With all these, I would no longer expect but hope for a better Iloilo. Or a better Philippines. For in expectation, we get disappointments but in hoping, we get surprises and miracles. Are not this country and Iloilo province (okey, include other provinces in Western Visayas) needing miracles?
Iloilo Province is under Tupas for six years (and still counting) but worse in the fifth distinct where he has been for nth years to consider his stint then as assemblyman, congressman and now governor. Whether or not those years yielded positive results, the outcome of the recent election could be interpreted in two ways: One, the Ilonggos remain politically immature in the exercise of their constitutional right (read: vote buying was rampant); and, two, the people want to give Tupas another term to prove his worth (read: he never did before).
As always, I never lose hope. If the tax collector Matthew had become Christ's apostle and Saul into St Paul, then Governor Tupas can still be otherwise (yan kung may himala!).
Same feelings I have towards our senators and congressmen. Despite Kit Tatad's appeal to put X on the ballot instead of voting for any senatoriable, I did vote for 12. Some of them, however, would not make it to Top 12 based on the latest results of the canvassing. But, what is significant for me is that I made a choice how tough the process may be. I always believe that the ability of every person to choose among choices manifests that indeed our country is not yet a hopeless case. It only takes for us to do more educating our fellows in making choices… comes the next election!
