July declared as national disaster consciousness month
The month of July is observed as the National Disaster Consciousness Month, and efforts of concerned agencies toward the security and welfare of the people nationwide are solidified through Presidential Executive Order No. 137.
Concerned about the occurrence of fortuitous events such as typhoon, flood, earthquake, tornado, landslide, volcanic eruption, tsunamis and drought, the government recognized the value of setting aside a designated period for people to focus their attention on the need to prepare for natural disasters.
Director Rosario T. Cabrera of the Office of Civil Defense-Department of National Defense V, said that EO 137 urges the public to observe the month of July as Disaster Consciousness Month focusing on the theme "Safe Ka Ba?: Programa Laban Sa Kalamidad Tungo Sa Pag-Unlad."
Cabrera said that as per National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) Memorandum Circular 2007-06, the member agencies of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC VI) are likewise requested to undertake relevant activities to mark the significance of the occasion and to hang streamers bearing the theme of this year's observance.
It may be noted that during this month, Cabrera said that the upsurge of the series of typhoons and floods in the country brings destruction to agriculture, life and properties which add to the misery of the people especially in the stricken areas.
The only way to counter natures rage is to prepare and have a thorough knowledge on measures that could help deter further loss of life, Director Cabrera concluded.
