Patients of Saviour International Hospital now have easy access to blood after it became a blood station last June 12, 2007.
On that day, the SIH management and the Philippine National Red Cross Iloilo Chapter inked a memorandum of agreement. Subject to the terms and conditions of the MOA, the PNRC will provide the blood station with several blood components; will collect blood from volunteer donors and screen each unit for malaria, syphilis, Hepatitis B and C, and HIV 1 & 1 following the standards of the Bureau of Health Facilities and Services of the Department of Health (DOH); the blood station will pick up the blood units from PNRC; the blood station shall inspect blood shipment for defects, leaks, hemolysis, and expiry dates prior to signing of the acknowledgment receipt; among others.

Bloodletting
Last June 18, the SIH held a bloodletting activity wherein hospital management, doctors, nurses and staff donated blood.
"We will set an example for other hospitals," according to Dr. Donna Grace Menia, chief medical technologist. "We will continuously hold a bloodletting activity as well as create awareness on voluntary blood donation," she added.
She said that PNRC had been supportive of the SIH's needs and this is the least they can do to return the favor.
The blood station had been a great help during the first bypass operation conducted outside of Luzon, which was made at SIH's Heart and Lung Institute last June 16. The blood station is open 24 hours a day.
