A few tips on saving the world -- superhero style
Technically, saving the world is big work, but most of the time, the little work that we do can actually add up into something really significant. Perhaps, many of us have seen movies of how super heroes save the world. It's either through their super powers or by some sheer stroke of luck.
For us writers, who watch super hero movies, we can't help but notice the metaphors on universal concern that are shown to the viewing public. Most people enjoy the films for their entertainment value without seeing between the frames. Well, it's technically impossible to see between the frames when the frames run hundreds of times per second, but again, this is another metaphor. What I am driving at here is that it's not really what the super heroes do in the movies that directly affect what the world becomes, because in real life, there are either extraordinary people doing ordinary things, or ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Which one are you?
Anyway, to make us all feel like super heroes, let me show you what I mean by saving the world super hero style by giving you ten clear tips that have already been shown in many superhero movies that most of us probably did not notice.
-
Burn organic like the Human Torch -- instead of using LPG which depletes our fossil fuel store, why not use organic kindling such as wood and charcoal. Aside from these materials being quite affordable, food also tastes better when cooked with them.
-
Use natural energy to your advantage like Storm -- let the wind dry your hair instead of using an electric blower, just slap on some mineral oil and the wind will do the rest. You can also count on the sun to do this if there is no wind; also try to find electronics that run on solar energy such as calculators and watches, this decreases the amount of poisonous waste that goes into the soil from used batteries. Other things you can do are dry your clothes under the sun instead of the Laundromat or electric dryer, use a "tadyao" to cool your water instead of refrigerators, and try to recycle your water!
-
Walk or run more often like the Flash -- walking and running contributes to minimizing our consumption of gasoline or diesel hence preventing air pollution and increasing the lifespan of our fossil fuel stores. Walking and running is even good for your heart.
-
Let your mind to the talking and the walking like Professor X and Gene Gray -- before you go somewhere; make sure you have set your appointments either by phone or by other forms of communication. This lessens the possibility of you going back to the same place in case your errand does not turn out well and thus the incidence of you taking your car or using other forms of public transportation. Another way of looking at this is thinking about practicality first before you go somewhere -- what is the more practical mode of transportation? Is it absolutely necessary for you to go to wherever you have to go, or could it be canceled?
-
Love the water like Aquaman -- it goes without saying that our marine resources are a treasure we must all take care of. Preserving our marine resources not only protects our coastlines but makes our seas less dangerous as well. More importantly, conserve water.
-
Think avian like Condorman and Angel -- our birds play a very important role in our ecosystem and so if we take good care of them we can be assured that the ecology remains balanced at all times. Do not buy those poor captured "maya" birds sold at schools or any rare or endangered bird you find at pet shops. Birds belong in the air, not in cages.
-
Be a Beast like Beast and Wolverine -- zealously guard our wildlife. Apparently, the only purpose of this is that we will have something to show our younger generation in the future, but believe me, this serves another purpose -- our wildlife plays a very important role in maintaining the landscape, and hence, ensuring that the ecology remains intact.
-
Control time like Superman (remember when he circled the earth and turned back time?) -- mind your minutes, being prompt and being punctual as well as doing more things in a lesser amount of time can only result to good things. Do not waste time.
-
Have a big arm, but a bigger heart like Devil Boy -- sometimes helping the environment is a task that should come from within you, setting an example for other people and acting upon what your heart feels is right always helps.
-
Be sensitive to light -- like Batman -- well not exactly -- the point here is we also have to conserve electricity, I've been racking my brains out for the tenth and I can't think of anyone else.
There you have it folks -- have patience -- I know this week's column is corny, but I do hope you enjoyed biting your lips over it.
Be rational; be insane...every once in a while! TTFN!
I love you all! Byers!!!
