A man who climbed an unfinished tower last Saturday to protest the putting up of a cell site in Brgy. San Rafael , Mandurriao ended up in jail.
Leopoldo Sayo a.k.a. Jun was placed behind bars by the Mandurriao police for alarm and scandal.
Sayo scaled the still unfinished tower measuring about 120 meters Saturday morning causing panic and alarm among his family members and residents in the area.
Reached by radio stations through his cell phone which he brought up the tower, Sayo said he climbed the tower in protest of the cell site being put up near their place.
He wanted Mayor Jerry Treñas to stop the construction of the cell site.
Sayo, who has five children, said they are afraid of the health hazard the cell site could bring to them.
He added there is danger that the cell site would fell down when strong typhoon comes as it stands on soft soil. He said the area formerly was a swamp.
Sayo, who is a resident of Brgy. Bolilao, said although the cell site sits on the lot belonging to Brgy. San Rafael it is much closer to their barangay.
Radio stations facilitated for Mayor Treñas and Councilor Perla Zulueta, former chair of the Sangguniang Panlungsod committee on environment and natural resources, to negotiate with Sayo to come down.
Zulueta personally went to the area and after a short negotiation facilitated by radio stations Sayo descended from the tower.
Sayo was then brought to the Mandurriao police station where he was detained for alarm and scandal.
Zulueta said the Sun Cellular, owner of the cell site, has complied with the necessary papers reason why it was granted an Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC).
