NSO 6 sees no hassle in POPCEN 2007
The National Statistics Office (NSO) in Western Visayas is expecting no major disruptions or difficulties in the conduct of the 2007 census of population.
NSO Statistician III Connie Virgula said they are now in Level Three of their training with the Census Area supervisors, while they will be conducting the Fourth level which will be in the municipalities, for about 3,600 Census Enumerators, by next week.
Beginning August 1, about 37,000 trained census takers, more than 7,000 team supervisors, and almost 2,000 census area supervisors will augment the NSO field staff in the nationwide conduct of the 2007 Census of Population to make a complete count of residents, both Filipinos and foreigners, who have stayed, or are expected to stay for at least a year in the Philippines.
NSO Administrator Carmelita Ericta said that while the agency has the capability and technical expertise to do the job, the role of the entire nation is important in the successful conduct of the census.
The 2007 POPCEN is aimed at providing government policymakers, programs, project implementers and other institutions both public and private data that they can use.
The national government has allocated P1.6 billion for the conduct of the 2007 POPCEN.
The 2007 POPCEN shall be undertaken to provide current data on population counts which shall be the basis for the Internal Revenue Allotment and the creation of new local government units and/or conversion of some of the existing LGUs to higher level pursuant to the provisions of the 1991 Local Government Code.
Basically, the data derived from a Census of Population will be used by government for formulation of policies and budget allocations, by the Business and industry for determining sites for establishments, consumer demands and labor, and by research and academic institutions for various population-related studies.
