Dela Llana appointed as deputy mayor
Dela Llana
For the first time in the history of Iloilo politics, a deputy mayor was appointed by the chief executive to perform duties and responsibilities the latter would give him. The appointment of the deputy mayor took effect last July 4, 2007.
In his executive order No.22, Mayor Jerry Treñas has appointed former Vice Mayor Guillermo Dela Llana as the deputy mayor. De la Llana's term as vice mayor ended last June 30, 2007. The same order was attested by City Secretary Diosdada Carado.
The order said, the deputy mayor shall be under the control and supervision of the city mayor.
"The deputy mayor shall perform duties and responsibilities assigned to him by the chief executive. Unless otherwise provided for by the law or contract, the duration of the term of the deputy mayor shall be at the pleasure of the city mayor," part of the EO reads.
It was not immediately known on whether De la Llana's function is only applicable whenever the mayor is out of the city or country and how it will affect the functions of Vice Mayor Jed Mabilog.
Treñas in the same order said it has been the practice of many democratic countries including the Philippines to appoint as deputy mayor persons who dedicated their lives in serving their city, municipality or province as public officials.
"This administration found De la Llana fitting and well suited to be appointed as Deputy Mayor of Iloilo City because of his excellent performance as Vice-Mayor of the City of Iloilo and decades of experience as public servant," Treñas said.
Dela Llana has a long track record as public official of Iloilo City having served as city councilor and vice mayor for several terms.
