10 areas with problematic waste disposal practices named
The city government's Office of the Public Services (OPS) has identified ten areas in the City Proper which have problematic waste disposal and segregation practices.
OPS chief Raul Gallo said these areas are: Ledesma-Delgado; Ledesma-Tanza; Ledesma-Quezon; Quezon; Delgado-Valeria; Bonifacio Drive in front of Hall of Justice; Valeria Street in front of SM; Iznart Street, Duran and Fort San Pedro.
Gallo said bags of garbage are left by establishments operating in said areas everyday.
He said the establishments throw their garbage late night or early dawn. They do not observe the proper schedule on garbage collection hours set in the city's different streets, said Gallo.
The garbage collection time in the city proper area starts from 5:00 in the afternoon and ends at 8:00 in the evening.
He added, the city government pays an extra amount to the JS Layson for the special trip in order to address the uncollected garbage in the city's main streets. The OPS has also requested for the help of Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) City Proper President Irene Ong.
Gallo added, he already asked the help of the barangay officials to contain the problem on waste disposal in said areas.
Gallo observed that the residents no longer practice waste segregation. He said the Materials Recovery Facility (MCF) put up in almost all barangays has turned useless.
Meanwhile, the Solid Waste Management Board is contemplating to push for the creation of an enforcement committee to deal with the violators of city ordinances on waste disposal.
The creation of the enforcement committee needs an executive order from Mayor Jerry Treñas, said Gallo.
