NMRDC's mango survey in Visayas set to kick off in August
The National Mango Research Development Center (NMRDC) will start its mango survey in Visayas in August, according to center chief Hernani Golez.
The survey seeks to determine if mango produce in the Visayas region are free of mango pulp and seed weevil for them to penetrate the United States market.
Relative to this, Golez urged all Visayan mango growers to cooperate because the project is for their benefit.
The survey will cover five percent of the entire number of all mango fruit bearing trees to be identified. Golez said 12 fruits will be extracted and opened from each of the sample to check for the presence of mango pulp and seed weevil.
Golez said mangoes coming from Visayas, particularly in Western Visayas would surely create a great impact if they are all qualified to enter the US market.
"Once we declare the area free from mango pulp and seed weevil the whole of Western Visayas is capable of exporting mangoes to the US which I did with Guimaras," he said.
The survey will run until September, and thereafter he will move to Mindanao for the same project.
The nationwide survey is part of the study undertaken by the NMRDC to determine the export competitiveness of country's super mangoes.
