Liga exec on resetting of brgy, SK polls: 'So be it'
The Lower House-backed resetting of polls is neither good news or bad news for Board Member Angel Briones.
President of the Iloilo Provincial Federation of the Liga ng mga Barangay and concurrent Secretary-General of the National Liga, Briones said it is business as usual in Iloilo's 1,721 barangays matched with "activity" from aspiring barangay officials now on the campaign trail.
From October of this year, the Lower House in this week's development agreed to have barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections moved to 2009. The postponement meant extended stay in office for about 60% of last-termer chapter presidents of the municipal Liga.
"So be it," Briones began in a The News Today (TNT) interview. "Whatever Congress eventually agree on, the Liga will abide. Meantime, we continue with our programs such as our anti-illegal drug advocacy, training of our member-barangay officials and locals on disaster preparedness and the insurance for barangay tanods."
The matter of barangay and SK polls has since awaited resolution with preparations on the go as early as December of last year. Briones for his part gave the May elections a try running as regular board member for Iloilo's Fifth District. He lost his election bid yet with the Fair Elections Act got to assume anew his Liga Presidency.
He shared in jest how at least three contenders in his hometown are busy campaigning throughout his barangay, Barangay San Antonio.
Briones further added that serious efforts to effect amendments in the Liga Constitution and By-Laws.
