Bacolod City -- The Provincial Government of Negros Occidental thru the Provincial Environment Management Office has announced the Search for Most Environment-Friendly Barangays and Schools. Now on its fifth year, the Environment-Friendly Search will start its activities this September and the winners will be awarded on June 2008 during the Culmination of the Provincial Environment Week.
To encourage more participation and to develop a more sustainable strategy, the number of categories was increased from six (6) to seven (7) this year. The categories are: 1) City Upland/ Urban Barangay 2) City Coastal Barangay 3) City Elementary School 4) Municipal Upland/Urban Barangay 5) Municipal Coastal Barangay and 6) Municipal Elementary School and 7) City/Mun Secondary School.
For the City and Municipal Barangay Categories (Upland/Urban & Coastal), the Association of Barangay Chairmen (ABC) President shall nominate the barangay entries. For the School Category, the City and the Provincial School Superintendents shall nominate the official entries. Official entries shall be endorsed by the City/Municipal Mayor to the Screening and Evaluation Committee (c/o PEMO).
Each Local Government Unit is allowed to have a maximum of three official entries for each category. The Seven Environment-Friendly awardees will receive One Hundred Thousand Pesos (P100, 000) each and a plaque of recognition, and the Fourteen Finalists (2 for each category) will receive Fifty Thousand Pesos (P50, 000) each and a plaque of recognition. There will be fifty semi-finalists (5 for each Barangay Category and 10 for each School category - final rating will not be lower than 80%) to receive Twenty Thousand pesos (P20, 000) each.
This year's Search gives more emphasis on the sustainability of environment-friendly best practices implemented in schools and barangays. Official School entries will be assessed according to their Documentation submitted (10%), Environmental Education and Advocacy (20%), Greening (10%), Solid Waste Management (15%), and other Special Environment Programs (10%), Physical Environment (5%)and Sustainability of the program (30%), while the barangay entries will be assessed according to their Documentation submitted (15%), Environmental Education and Advocacy (20%), Greening (10%), Solid Waste Management (15%) and other Special Environment Programs (10%), and Sustainability of the program (30%).

The project is in line with the environment advocacy program for the protection and conservation of Negros environment of Governor Joseph G. Marañon.
