Sun Yat Sen's star student is city's 'Girl Mayor'
A consistent honor student of the Sun Yat Sen High School is this year's "Girl Mayor" in a highly-acclaimed competition sponsored by the Rotary Club of Iloilo City.
Besting some 300 participants from various city schools, the very well-loved Jelica Diane Varon-King, Fourth Year Star Diamond Sun Yat Corps Commander easily got the most coveted seat.
As such, King will work closely with City Mayor Jerry Treñas in a partnership that links up the youngsters with the city's elected and public officials.
The only daughter of couple Joely and Armie King, Jelica Diane is a proud sister to younger brother Jethro Aramis.
Among the Girl Mayor's achievements was bagging the regional spelling championship title of an inter-school competition, championship title of Chess alongside being the First Runner Up of the Science Quiz of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
"Mayor King" is also the current president of Sun Yat Sen High School's Student Council and Vice President fo the Red Cross Youth.
Her academic excellence has since been noted since pre-school.
This year's search for City Boy and Girl Officials was done under the leadership of Lendy Certeza, Rotary Club of Iloilo City president.
The first part of competition was the written examinations last August 25 and thereafter, the 300 hopefuls trimmed down to 46 students. An interview was then conducted with the pre-qualified students by a panel composed of Rotary Club Officers.
Girl City Vice Mayor is Audrey Laglagaron of the Philippine Science High School while the Boy City Administrator is Paolo Martin Taruc of Westbridge.
