Thousands out of flooded city barangays
More than 25,000 residents of the city were evacuated as of yesterday afternoon as flooding brought by continued rains triggered by typhoons Falcon and Goring forced residents to leave their homes.
Around 25,505 persons or 5,821 families from city's six districts were evacuated at the height of the flooding, according to the a report of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council(RDCC) as of 4 p.m. yesterday.
The biggest number of evacuees was reported in Arevalo with 2,018 families or 10,090 persons. This was followed by Molo (1,053 families or 5,265 persons), Mandurriao (864 families or 4,320 persons), Jaro (755 families or 3,775 persons), La Paz (998 families or 1,240 persons) and City Proper (163 families or 815 persons). The evacuees stayed in barangay halls and chapels, elementary schools and in public gymnasiums.
Arevalo was the most heavily affected district with 11,920 persons or 2,384 families followed by Mandurriao (9,950 persons or 1,990 families), La Paz (7,380 persons or 1,476 families), Molo (5,265 persons 1,053 families) Jaro (4,700 persons or 940 families) and City Proper (815 persons pr 163 families).
The number of barangays affected by the flooding in Western Visayas reached 115 with 62 in Negros Occidental, according to the RDCC report.
The flooding affected 21,494 families or 107,483 persons. Negros Occidental accounted for 13,410 families or 71,643 persons.
The number of casualties remained at one dead and three missing, all in Antique province after landslides and flooding hit rural villages in Valderrama, Bugasong and Patnongon towns in Antique.
Heavy rains brought by the La Niña weather phenomenon are expected to continue in the next few months.
