Plastic items cause flash floods
The improper disposal of plastic items in various areas of the city was the major cause of last week's flash floods.
This is the finding of the joint inspection team from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and the City Engineers Office (CEO).
In yesterday's meeting with Mayor Jerry Treñas, DPWH District Engineer Manuel Ticao Jr. and CEO chief Marito Amatorio reported that plastic items clogged the drainage canals causing the streets to be flooded.
No other details were made about the contributory factors which led to last week's flash floods. The report did not even touch on the state of the drainage system in the city.
Classes in elementary and secondary levels were suspended starting Thursday last week due to flashfloods which occurred in various parts of the city.
The Iloilo Terminal Market also became flooded and garbage were observed floating along the area.
With Ticao and Amatorio's assessment, the chief executive calls for the creation of a protocol committee" to take charge of the construction of drainage system in the city.
The committee will see to it that the drainage system in the city is constructed based on the city's plan. The trio will meet again to finalize the creation of the "protocol committee."
