City declared under state of calamity
Iloilo City has been declared under state of calamity following the flash floods caused by heavy rains the other week. The declaration was made in last Wednesday's regular session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
None of the members of the city council opposed Majority Floor Leader Eduardo Peñaredondo's proposal to declare the city under the state of calamity.
Fifty one barangays in the city were affected by flash floods the other week. However, days after the resolution was approved by the city council, heavy downpour continues to affect the barangays as the monsoon rains continue to hit the city.
The approval of the resolution gave Mayor Jerry Treñas the authority to spend a portion of the city's five percent calamity fund to purchase immediate food stuff for the flood victims. Last week, some 2,021 families awaited help from the city government.
The poor drainage condition and garbage were identified as major factors in the occurrence of flash floods in the city.
