Ten things to do on a Sabbatical
I had been quite busy for the past few weeks. In fact, I haven't really sat down for more than thirty minutes to give time to my writing. I have gone from the office to the house and done nothing but work, eat and sleep. I have been thinking about filing a month-long leave for a sabbatical, but I guess I'm just too shrewd with my leave credits that I find it quite wasteful to spend a year's worth of leave credits on nothing. Actually, I don't really view it as spending leave credits on nothing, so I would probably consider that sabbatical when I have gathered up my creative juices for some reading and writing. In the meantime, here are ten things that you guys who are already on sabbatical could do to make sure that your vacation doesn't go to waste. Productivity in a sabbatical is always a fringe benefit.
-
Catch up on your reading. I am sure you have accumulated enough books that you haven't got to reading yet. Use your vacation to update yourself on those novels and stories that you haven't found time for.
-
Explore a new hobby. Try something that you haven't tried before. Consider handicraft or poetry. These things can relax you and at the same time stimulate the cogs and wheels in your resting mind.
-
Cook. Try out new recipes. Be innovative and creative and update your old recipes with new twists. Cooking can be very therapeutic – just make sure you hit the gym as well, so that you don't pack up on those extra calories.
-
Schedule a night out with your old friends. Other than just making sure that you have time for yourself, it's also nice to assure your friends whom you may have neglected because of work, that they still fill a space in your life. Don't have too much alcohol though; you might spend the rest of your sabbatical in bed with a terrible headache if you binge on alcohol.
-
Start an herb or flower garden. Perhaps you have been putting off on starting that garden for too long now. Now is the time to get those hands in the dirt. Many psychologists have proven through certain research that playing or working in the mud or the dirt brings out the inner child in all of us.
-
Movie binge. Work has probably made you an outdated movie fan. Catch up on those videos. Go easy on the buttered popcorn though, unless you wanna turn into a couch potato over your sabbatical.
-
Make yourself a personal email. Most working people, because of the demands of work, barely have time to catch up on technology. Having your own email can really make things easier especially when it comes to communication.
-
Learn to dance. If you already know how to dance, try some steps that you haven't tried out yet. Get into the salsa, or the cha-cha, or the twist, or any other dance that you think you would enjoy doing. Dancing can give you a very good cardiovascular work out.
-
Come up with a vitamin regimen. To prepare yourself for work when you hit the stations again, make a sound vitamin schedule. For instance, write down which vitamins you should stock up on during weekdays and which ones you should have during weekends. Scheduling your vitamin intake can really help in isolating your body's needs, this way, you don't have too much or too little.
-
Sleep. Try to get a good amount of rest and sleep during your sabbatical. This can really help in improving the condition of your skin and snapping your metabolism back to normalcy. Work can sometimes get our systems out of whack and a week's worth of enough sleep and rest can really do miracles.
There you are folks! Enjoy your sabbatical and make something out of it!!!
