Suggestive therapy and the workaholic
One Sunday after church, I finally had the chance to visit my friend Atho's new baby, the Kasanag Wellness Center located at B&C Square, Iznart-Solis Streets.
Two days earlier, it was my birthday. On that Sunday, he gave me a really great gift. He applied on me what he calls suggestive therapy. It is a method of psychotherapy that relies exclusively or predominately upon suggestion. My health concerns have prompted him to apply it on me. Such therapy follows the theory that our body has the power to heal itself. Here, it says that the subconscious works 24 hours a day. While we are asleep, it works and this is the part of our brain that needs to receive the "power of suggestion." So, when you suggest to your subconscious to do things to your body, it does so while you are rested.
This therapy requires you to assume a dead man's pose and let parts of your body slowly relax, starting from the tips of your toes to your head. Then, you are put to sleep for 15 minutes and the therapist applies energy on you. Anyway, as soon as I woke up, I felt so relaxed and energized.
Since applying suggestive therapy every night, my sleep, which has always been short (five hours at most), was still short but rested. I wake up every morning very rested and energized. The stress of the previous day is gone.
Kasanag Wellness Center is going to offer this service, among others, to the public soon.
As we all know, stress causes illnesses once it has accumulated through the years. "You have given so much of yourself to your work in the past years. It is time to give time in taking care of yourself," a friend advised last June.
He was right. In the past 15 years, I've spent almost every minute of my life working. If I'm not working, I'm thinking of work. Every time a friend or a family member invites me to go out, I always say, "I have to work." I missed family gatherings, gave up boyfriends and irritated my late husband because of work. On the day that my husband died, I had to stay up late that night to finish my deadlines. The next day and the days after, I held meetings with my staff to ensure that things go smoothly despite a tragedy. When I mourned, I mourned during lunch break, reasoning that it's a personal matter, so do it on you break time. Remember Katherine Zeta Jones in "No Reservations"? Another friend said I was a freak. She couldn't put it mildly. I was a work addict, not a workaholic, she said.
These friends' comments and my observation on how my boss Marichel manages to balance her life yet still run the newspaper superbly, led me to do a self-analysis and realized that for one to be a better worker, one indeed has to live a balanced life (okay, okay, there's work again .. but I just can't help it). I started giving time to my friends and going out with my family. Believe me, it made me feel guilty and irresponsible. Then, I started taking up minor responsibilities outside of work. I resumed going to church. Once I got the hang of it, I engaged in sports. I started making artworks again. As time goes on, it made me realize that you can never be too busy to do other things.
Workaholics are known for neglecting their health. Well, your health is worth a million pesos. I came across Jobwerx News and they suggested practical ways to improve one's quality of life. Let me share their tips.
First, they advised that one has to eat right and exercise. Being healthy should be your first priority always, because without your health, nothing else matters. Second, plan how much work you will do in one day and stick to it. That way you'll be less likely to go overboard because you don't know where to draw the line. Reserve your free time for friends and family (no co-workers), may it be a weekend or a weekday. Third, always make time for yourself. Take up a hobby, do a bubble bath or rent a movie.
The stress of the "past life" cannot be undone anymore, but there's always a second chance, right?
