Barangay, SK bets face judgment from voters
The 247,522 regular voters and 12,119 voters for the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) will go out today to vote for the new set of barangay and SK officials. Of the 180 barangays, only 166 positions for punong barangays will be coveted as 14 run unopposed.
Of the regular voters, the district of Jaro has the biggest number of voters numbering to 58,344. There are also 3,002 voters for the SK. There are 42 barangays in Jaro with 421 established precincts.
The district of Molo comes second with 41,756 regular voters and 2,080 voters for SK. Molo has 25 barangays with 272 established precincts.
Lapaz district with 25 barangays has 31,776 registered voters and 1,563 SK voters. It has 213 established precincts. While, Mandurriao district with 18 barangays has a registered voters of 30,121 and 1,490 for SK voters. The district has 179 established precincts.
Arevalo district has a registered voters of 24,827 and 1,163 SK voters. There are 13 barangays in Arevalo and with 146 established precincts. And Lapuz with 12 barangays has 20,250 registered voters and 883 SK voters. It has 272 established precincts.
To emerge as sure winners in the barangay race are the barangay captains of President Roxas, Magsaysay, Yulo-Arroyo, Roxas Village and San Agustin in City Proper.
The barangay captains in South San Jose, North Baluarte and San Pedro, all in Molo also run unopposed. The same is true with the punong barangays of Aguinaldo, Laguda and Lopez Jaena Sur in Lapaz and Arguelles, M.V. Hechanova and San Jose in Jaro.
Earlier, City Election Officer Jonathan Sayno said at least 2,000 are running for positions in the barangay council, and 500 for punong barangay in the 180 barangays in this city.
Meanwhile, Iloilo City Police Office Deputy Director Supt. Ranulfo Demiar said he is not expecting major election related incident in the city. He foresees that there will be no violent incidents other than "shouting matches" during the election day.
The police had already met with the district presidents regarding the election concerns of the Philippine National Police. So far there is no record of election-related violence or incidents in the city, said Demiar.
