Singles & the City
On being single
Why do Jim and I write about single life and the city? Well, "Singles & the City" will try to lightheartedly look at single life. With all its rituals including dating, partying, traveling, etc. this column hopes to dissect our life as bachelors by interviewing the singles we meet, featuring our activities, and sharing the lifestyle most singles, like us, lead. Once we started of topics to write, it's hard to stop. And that is where we have left it, really. We still don't know where we stand on the issue of "being single." Or whether or not we intend to find our better halves soon. To be honest, although most single men, like us, spend our entire life trying to escape singledom, it's really not that bad. It's a lot of fun actually. So, yes, it's worth it. Just about.
Oli's Profile & Introductory Statement:
Full Name : Oliver Victor B. Amoroso
Nickname : "Oli"
Address : Sikatuna Village, Quezon City
Age : 27
Company : GMA Network, Inc.
Position : Regional TV Manager for Events, Promo, and Local Sales (EPLS)
Hobbies : My passion for travel and adventure started at the age of 13. In 2005, I packed my things, traveled half across the world, and became a nomad. With a laptop, a bunch of travel guides, and a passport on my backpack, these led me to the usual and unusual places in the Middle East, Africa, South Asia, and the United Kingdom. I have already traveled 6,000 miles, by car, around the U.K., experienced camping at the Red Sand, rode a camel, and visited 15 countries in 4 continents. I came back in the Philippines last September and resumed my career in the corporate world --- and being a bachelor.
Statement:
Don't get me wrong. I'm all for love --- it's a wonderful and rare thing if you can find it --- and I've certainly spent my time in it, out of it, and generally traveled half of the world for it. But after going through a long relationship that didn't end well, I've come to realize that no matter what the cheesy movies tell you, a single life is not a life that's incomplete or second best.
The relationship you have with yourself is in fact the one affair that will never disappoint or come up short and it's also the one that will last, particularly in a time when even marriages can be as fleeting as the seasonal displays at Esprit!
So as my 28th birthday approaches, I'll do my best to brush aside the inevitable question of "you're getting older, when are you getting married?" during family gatherings, and the media messages that assure me that my day, my week and my life are going to be ruined if I don't find my better half soon.
And instead be happy, for now, as a bachelor!
Jim's Profile & Introductory Statement:
Full Name : Jimdel B. Macapagal
Nickname : "Jim"
Address : Boni EDSA, Mandaluyong City
Age : 32
Company : Chevron Holdings, Inc.
Position : CPA/Design Architect, Business Systems Team
Hobbies :
Exploring the many islands of the Philippines and the many countries of the world; reading anything to enrich my personality and wisdom as well as entertain me in whatever way; watching any film (from critically acclaimed ones to those which you'd like to get your money back) and TV shows particularly reality shows; dining out anywhere as long as there's good food; having coffee with friends especially during work hours; getting drunk
Statement:
Being single is one of the most exciting phases in life. It is the time to experience independence at its possible maximum. You can do whatever you darn please, frankly speaking. For those who like travelling (like me), this is the most opportune time to do it. As long as you have the resources and time, you can pack your things anytime and head to that place you've always wanted to see. Can married people do that? I certainly don't think so especially if kids are there to take care of.
There are millions of other reasons to enjoy the beauty of singlehood but it should all boil down to knowing oneself while having fun in the process. When you're single, you pretty much think about yourself only and that gives singles the time to discover who they really are and what they truly want in life. I am in this exciting time now in my life and I'm enjoying every single moment of it!
