Phivolcs to transfer monitoring equipment to San Jose, Antique
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) bared its plan to transfer its earthquake monitoring facilities to the capital town of Antique from Anini-y town also of the said province.
Phivolcs director Dr. Renato Solidum Jr. said his office has received a communication from Anini-y Mayor Rene Policar informing him that their facilities in their town are no longer functional.
Policar even asked the Phivolcs to just donate some of the equipment to Anini-y.
The mayor, according to Solidum, also mentioned that the facilities are now becoming an eyesore to the tourists because they are installed right within the vicinity of the Sira-an Hot Springs.
"Our earthquake monitoring facilities in Anini-y, Antique are still functional. It's just that we do not have direct communication facilities in the area so it's hard for us to get the needed data in the said town. Because of this, we hope we could transfer the equipment to San Jose next year," Solidum said.
He expressed gratitude to the residents and officials of the municipality for providing them a temporary space for their monitoring facilities.
Phivolcs installed the monitoring system in Anini-y after residents reported a possible presence of volcano because of the presence of sulfur in the Sira-an hot springs.
However, after several years of study, Phivolcs declared that there is no active volcano in Panay, especially in Antique. (PNA)
