Coastal barangays alerted over tropical storm Land
Residents of coastal barangays in the city have been alerted since Monday night following the entry of tropical storm "Lando" which has placed Iloilo at signal number 2.
Iloilo City Crisis Management Center (ICCMC) chief Engr. Joe Papa said all the barangay captains in the city's coastal lines had been told to make the necessary preparations in the event evacuation of residents would take place.
Papa said they always give priority to the coastal areas in times of typhoon as many of the houses are very close to the shoreline and are vulnerable to strong winds and big waves.
Papa said they made rounds in the city's coastal barangays until 12 midnight of Monday just to inform the residents and make the necessary preparations.
Aside from monitoring the coastal barangays, the city government likewise monitored the Aganan and Tigum Rivers. The city has identified 75 barangays which are flood prone.
The weather forecast that placed Panay at Signal Number 2 also prompted Provincial Iloilo City School Superintendent Raymundo Lapating to cancel classes from elementary and secondary level. Iloilo City School Superintendent Dr. Erlinda Gencaya also gave the same order.
The Philippine Coast Guard also stopped the operations of fastcrafts and roro vessels going to Bacolod City. Pumpboats plying Iloilo-Guimaras strait, on the other hand, were allowed to sail because of the moderate sea water condition.
The weather bulletin released 5:00 am Tuesday said the provinces of Palawan, Iloilo, Antique, Guimaras and Cuyo islands will experience stormy weather with rough to very rough seas. Bicol region and the rest of Visayas will experience rains and gusty winds which may trigger flashfloods and landslides. The rest of Mindanao will have mostly cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms while Luzon will be mostly cloudy with scattered rainshowers.
