BFP to conduct fire safety inspection
Starting today, the Bureau of Fire Protection - Iloilo City will conduct an inspection of commercial establishments in the city especially those that sell or manufacture fireworks and other pyrotechnic products to ensure that they comply with the fire safety requirements of the Fire Code of the Philippines.
City Fire Marshall Insp. Nilo G. Pacifico said the inspection is part of their periodic ocular inspection as well as preparation for the coming holidays where people go to the malls and stores for their Christmas shopping.
Pacifico advised stall owners and vendors of fireworks and other pyrotechnic products to secure pertinent permits from concerned agency to avoid apprehension and confiscation of such products. He, likewise advised them to observe proper safety in handling and storage of the finished pyrotechnic products to avoid destructive fire.
Pacifico cited the pyrotechnic related incident in Arevalo District last year that claimed two lives.
Earlier, the Department of Interior and Local Government directed the BFP to conduct random re-inspections on all commercial establishments in order to ensure the compliance of fire safety regulations and standards including the sale or use of fireworks and other pyrotechnic products.
The inspection also aims to ensure that these structures have adequate and fully functioning fire exits, fire alarms, smoke detectors and other fire safety equipment and facilities.
The DILG also urged stall owners and vendors to cooperate and support the BFP's fire prevention efforts and campaign by ensuring that they possess the necessary permits for the sale of firecrackers and that they comply with the standards set by the fire bureau. (PIA)
