Satellite prosecutor's office for Boracay urged
BORACAY -- Police here is asking the government especially the Department of Justice (DoJ) to set-up a satellite prosecutor's office to speed up the filing of cases against law violators.
Boracay Special Tourist Police Office (BSTPO) chief Senior Inspector Auxilio Dador said they need a prosecutor to inquest the suspects whom they have apprehended for several violations. The prosecutor will attend to all the complaints filed by police
Dador said the installation of a prosecutor in the island will help in the resolution of the complaints and eventual filing of cases in the appropriate court. At present, they are filing all the complaints before the Malay Municipal Trial Circuit Court. Boracay Island is part of the municipality of Malay.
He added that it is even expensive on their part to bring the suspects to the mainland when filing cases as they have to bring along security escorts. It will only entail some P200 for the prosecutor to reach the island while police has to spend much in going to the mainland to file the complaint.
Dador, who only assumed as BSTPO chief last October, hopes the government would heed their request as it would greatly help in the maintenance of peace and order in the island.
Dador also noted the need to augment the BSTPO with additional police personnel.
He said the ratio between the police and the people during peak season is 1:20,000. During peak season, some 150,000 visitors troop to the island for vacation. The ideal ratio is 1:500, he said. Currently, there are only 70 police personnel that serves the tourist destination.
