New SK prexy urged to focus on anti-drug drive, clean and green
City Mayor Jerry Treñas urged winning Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) federation president John Melchor Mabilog to center his program on the campaign against illegal drugs, even as he asked the SK's help for the clean and green program of the city government.
Mabilog, nephew of Vice Mayor Jed Patrick Mabilog, was sworn in by Treñas after he was elected as SK federation president last December 6, 2007. He obtained 108 votes out of the 176 votes cast during the election. His closest contender Frances Grace Parcon, daughter of Councilor Armand Parcon, got 44 votes and Kesiah Pesina, daughter of Councilor Antonio Pesina, has 19 votes.
The younger Mabilog will replace outgoing federation president Stevie Rey Abitang as ex-officio member of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
Other than the concerns on illegal drugs and the clean and green program, the mayor also wants the youth to come up with relevant sports activities. Treñas said he wants all programs relative to the upliftment of the youth be implemented. The implementation should also be coordinated with their respective barangay councils.
Treñas said he was informed that there were a lot of Sangguniang Kabataan chairs who failed to utilize their budget for worthwhile projects. The chief executive likewise expect for a harmonious working relationship with the SK for a better Iloilo. "We must ensure that all the programs for the youth shall be implemented," he said.
Mabilog who is SK chair of Brgy. Tap-oc in Molo district, acknowledged the dangers brought about by illegal drugs and alcohol to the youth. He vowed to implement programs that would help the youth veer away from said vices.
He added that he would also focus his program on sports development activities, moral recovery, education, environment and livelihood.
