PESO to organize OFW communities
KALIBO, Aklan -- To help families of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who were affected by the strengthening of the peso, the Provincial Employment Service Office (PESO) will organize OFW communities next year.
PESO head Vivian Solano said OFWs' families complained about the strengthening peso against the dollar. This inspired them to organize OFWs' families in the province.
"The Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) and the Philippine Employment Overseas Agency (POEA) have initiated livelihood programs for organized OFW families and communities. We want to help these families boost their financial income through a series of livelihood projects offered by POEA and OWWA," Solano said.
She said that by January, they will coordinate with the newly-elected barangay officials to reach out to the OFW families and register themselves through their barangay hall so the PESO would have an official number of OFWs living in the province.
"We already surveyed two years ago but it failed to reach out to the OFW families. We do not know the reason why but the survey only registered around 800 OFW families in the province, a statistics that is highly unbelievable with the increasing number of Aklan residents who work abroad," Solano said.
Solano said those identified can avail of projects and benefits provided by the OWWA and the POEA.
