All set for Liga election in city
The election for the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) in the city will be held on Saturday at the Iloilo Social Hall. As of yesterday, Barangay Capt. Irene Ong and Barangay Capt. Rafael Palmares Jr. of Magsaysay Village remain to be the contenders for the post.
Barangay Capt. Bobby Divinagracia of Barangay San Agustin, City Proper said the votes will be made through a secret balloting. The conduct of the election will be opened to the members of the media for coverage. The casting of votes will start from 9:30 am until 12 noon.
The election for the Liga ng mga Barangay on Saturday, December 29, 2007 is contained in Department of Interior and Local Government memorandum circular 2007-151 handed by Secretary Ronaldo Puno.
The guidelines also provide that the department shall supervise the conduct of the local Liga ng mga Barangay elections, extend support when necessary in sending notice of the date, time and venue where the election is to be held.
The DILG shall also secure for the use of the Liga the needed ballot box, portable voting booths and writing board from the city treasurer's office and other adequate paraphernalia for the use. During the election, there shall be a board of election supervisors to be chaired by the DILG officer with the Commission on Elections representative and representatives from non-government organizations and people's organizations as members
Divinagracia, who will run as member of the board of directors for the league said the conduct of election will be opened as those aspiring for the position are already "matured people."
Earlier, Ong got endorsements from 176 other barangay captains in the city. Ong also enjoys the full support of Department of Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez Sr, Congressman Raul Gonzalez Jr. and Mayor Jerry Treñas.
