A promise
Ten minutes before a new year unfolds; a group of friends had a chance to meet in one place and made resolutions for the upcoming year. Actually they had been doing this thing since then.
A chain smoker said, "If I'll continue smoking a pack of cigarette in an hour, I'm killing myself softly. If I'll stop, I'm killing myself that fast. But I'll try; maybe I'll live after I'll kill my vice."
A drug addict shared his thoughts, "If I'll continue puffing my kind of stuff once a day, I can see heaven each day. If I'll stop, I can see the reality of life. But if I'll try, maybe I can experience life heavenly."
A prostitute gave her lines, "If I'll continue this job every single night, I'm losing my self-worth. If I'll stop, I'll be losing hundreds of money each night. But I'll try; maybe I can regain my self-worth after looking for a more decent job even if I'm not receiving a thousand at all."
A black sheep in a family interrupted, "If I'll continue to become a deviant, I'll always be the star in the family. They will always notice every move I'll make and every step I'll take. If I'll stop, my shining moments will end. But if I'll try, maybe I'll shine even if I am a good follower too."
A politician surprised the group, "If I'll continue to become a corrupt leader, millions of pesos will be all mine. If I'll stop, even a cent I can't call my own. But if I'll try, maybe I'll be winning the trust of millions of my fellowmen."
An entrepreneur uttered, "If I'll continue to cheat to my customers by not giving the exact amount of goods to them, I'll get more profit. If I'll stop, I only receive so-so revenue. But if I'll try, maybe winning more buyers is just like gaining more profit."
A teacher mentioned, "If I'll continue to nag at my students most of the time, I cannot win them. If I'll stop, I'll be a friend to them. But if I'll try, maybe I am not just a mentor to them but a friend as well."
A cell phone "addict" made a message, "If I'll continue to crave for a new cell phone, I'll be "in." If I'll stop, I'll be totally out in the list of "who's hot?" But if I'll try, maybe being "in" is not a matter of having a new cell phone; however it is a matter of always replying every time my friends will text me."
A mother shared her feelings, "If I'll continue to insist to my child the course I'd like him to take in college, I'm not giving him a freedom to choose. If I'll stop, I'll be losing one of my powers as a mother. But if I'll try, I can foresee my child as a happy individual in the future enjoying his own chosen profession."
A child answered, "If I'll continue to become naughty, I'll be getting the attention of all. If I'll stop, no one can notice my presence. But if I'll try, maybe in my silence I can catch attention."
Suddenly one member of the group stood up and started to cry. And then he shouted, "I'm sorry!"
"Why?" a big question was raised in chorus coming from the 10 individuals before him.
"I am a gossiper. I let other people know who my friends are and what their flaws in life are. I am a proud person to put you, all of you down. That in the eyes of many people, I am the best in our group. If I'll inform all of you, I'll be losing you guys. But if I'll try, maybe this will be the end of our friendship," tears continued to flow from his eyes as he mentioned these lines.
Then a good fellow went close to him and tapped his back, "Its 12 midnight already. It's New Year, make a change. All of us here commit mistakes. It is not that late to correct the wrongdoings we've done to other people. We have the right time now, make use of it."
Then he humbly said, "I will not try but I promise."
It's 2008! Change for the better not for the other way around. Making New Year's resolution is a promise not a compromise.
