City to assess impact of Infante flyover's opening
The city government is now on the process of assessing the impact of the opening to traffic of the P407 million flyover along Infante and Gen. Luna streets.
The flyover was opened to the motorists last Dec. 30, 2007 after several months of delay in its completion.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said the city's Traffic Technical Working Group is conducting an assessment to determine the flow of traffic at the intersection of Infante and Gen. Luna streets with the opening of the flyover.
Treñas said the city government has still to set up the lights to brighten the area. The lights would be donated by Globe communications.
The mayor also allayed the fears of the commuters over the state of the vehicular flyover.
He said, the safety of the motorists was considered before it was opened for public use and upon the approval of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
However, the official inauguration of the flyover could not yet be ascertained. It was earlier reported that no less than Pres. Gloria Arroyo will grace the inauguration of the flyover.
The vehicular fly over is a six-span modular steel bridge supported by board piles, piers and abutments.
The completion of the project was delayed after reports on the discrepancies in the construction of the project came out. The discrepancies which are in violation of the contract between the Philippine government and the Mabey & Johnson, contractor of the project, includes in the construction of piers, 2, 3, 4 and 5. The discrepancies prompted the government to take over the project.
The reinforcement of piers and other remaining works such as embankment, approaches, concreting of abutment and part of the retaining wall in approaches was continued by the DPWH regional office.
