Floating hopes
Year 2008, another year for the Philippines, another year which is full hopes and dreams for a lot of Filipinos.
The Philippines is a third world country until today. We raised millions of uneducated and homeless Filipinos. Yet, each one us has the attention of blaming these social problems on our politics. Some would say that it is the set of politicians who makes the Philippine politics unclean. History wise, Philippine politics is never clean. As early as the first republic government, corruption was evident. History repeats itself or it is the people who repeat history?
We do expect something productive, something more from our leaders. Filipinos rely on its government, but the question is, what is there to rely on this kind of system in the government? Why do we hope and dream for the betterment of our lives yet fail to hope that this grimy government of ours be changed? The game is, hope against hope and dream against dream.
We face countless of problems every single day – the lack of education of most Filipinos, the blooming population, homeless fellows, the poor health care the government gives to the sick and dying and the soaring of our poverty level. We'll include in the list the unstoppable increase in prices of petroleum and basic necessities every other month. It seemed that we are bombarded with problems that are getting worst as each day passes by.
The government is facing corruption allegations such as the ZTE broadband deal and the open distribution of the P500,000 cash gifts to congressmen. Moreover, the "Hello Garci" controversy is still an issue even though it fades but it created more chaotic political scenes.
At the end of the day, we've noticed that we let ourselves carried away by the chaos and destruction the government leads us. If we keep on swaying to their tunes, we would just be dancing like them. These politicians would never stop wrangling with each other. We are placed at the center of two muddled world of politicians. Then we just say who the real culprit of them all is?
We have been burying the problem on the government. The question is would the president, who has the executive powers matter? Would the system of the government matter?
Aimee, a good student of mine said, "For all we know, we all haven't done much for our country. We question their credibility. Yet we never ask ourselves if we have done much for our country. We should be ashamed of ourselves. We blame the downfall of our country to the effect of their corruptness; yet, the country does not stand on the government alone. We as people still have the choice to make things better, but have we made it better?"
This 2008 let us make our hopes be real. Let us make our dreams come true. The betterment of our lives is the betterment we foresee for our own country. Let us give hope to our hopeless nation. Let us do some positive moves; we have the power in our hands to make the Philippines a better place for you and me.
