Dinagyang Drum and Lyre contest today
People are expected to line up the major streets of the city as well as in the two judging areas to witness today's drum and lyre competition in both elementary and secondary level. Ten competing schools in the elementary level and another two from the secondary level will vie for the Glockenspiel contest.
The competing schools in the elementary level are the A. Montes Elementary School, Rizal Elementary School, Guimbal Central Elementary School, A. Montes II Elementary School, SPED-ISEC, Jaro II Elementary School, Cubay Elementary School, Iloilo Central Elementary School, Baluarte Elementary School and Arevalo Elementary School.
For the secondary level, the competing schools are the Fort San Pedro National High School and Iloilo City National High School. In today's competition, they will show their skills and talents to delight the audience at the Iloilo Freedom Grandstand (judging area 1) and Provincial Capitol (judging area 2). Each school is given 10 minutes to perform including the entrance and exit.
The competition starts at 8 a.m. The streets would be closed as early as as 6:00 a.m. The competing schools would be judged according to the drill formation that is 50 percent of the total scores. The drill formation includes variety of formation, precision and execution of movement and cadence and discipline.
The remaining 50 percent of the scores would be based on music. The schools are given the choice for their piece, tone/pitch, orchestration (rhythm, tempo and ensemble).
The first prize winner would receive P15,000 plus trophy; 2nd prize P10,000 plus trophy and 3rd prize for P5,000 plus trophy.
The judges for the drum and lyre competition are Mr. Nelson Checa, Mr. Marciano Guanco, Ms. Eden Deriaga, Mrs. Juliet Braga, Mrs. Carmen Abonado and Dr. Janelyn Fundal.
