Becoming a better communicator
Communicating or speaking is a basic skill that most of us never think of improving and developing ourselves at. Many of us even think that getting our message across is enough. Though we have been used to this idea, I do submit to the conviction that the belief is more of a misconception. God has endowed us with the ability to make sounds, and create a common understanding of these sounds, not only to communicate or speak out our thoughts and feelings but also to deliver these effectively and well.
God never wants us to be mediocre with the gift He bestowed upon us. The gift or privilege of having the organs that facilitate our communication potential carries with it the responsibility to make ourselves good at the art of communicating or speaking. This responsibility gives us distinction from those who been given less with the skill – like the deaf-mute and the other special cases.
I am not a good speaker myself. Though, if I would only be judged according to my school credentials, especially in my speech-related subjects, people might think I have exceptional public speaking ability. But, the fact is, I need lots of practice and experience to rightfully accord with justice the grades that my teachers had generously given me.
This awareness pushes me to look for venues to improve and develop my communication skill. I participated in programs that gave me the opportunity to engage in public speaking. I joined extemporaneous speaking contest even if I was not sure of winning. I never declined invitation for hosting or anything that has given me chances of gaining confidence in speaking at the public.
Last Tuesday (Feb. 5), I had a chance to attend the 25th regular weekly meeting of Iloilo Executive Toastmasters Club at Sarabia Manor Hotel. Certainly, it was not my first experience to witness the encounter of people who have insatiable interest in the art of communicating. Twelve years ago, I had participated twice in the meetings of San Miguel Corporations Toastmasters Club in Mandaue City, Cebu. It was the experience that I confirmed my inadequacy in the skill of public speaking. That experience also sparked in me the craving to become a good communicator.
The toastmasters' meeting was themed "Future Opportunities" and I found my attendance in that meeting so timely. I always believe that being a good communicator opens many opportunities. Indubitably, good communicator stands out in the crowd. Good communicator makes good impression to other people. But, other than these privileges, I want to be a good communicator to improve my confidence and express my thoughts more effectively and well. have heard Toastmasters (TMs) Sam, Philipp, Ranie, and Alma speak during the meeting and I admire them. They inspire me to be somebody I always want to be – a better communicator.
The Iloilo Executive Toastmasters Club meets every Tuesday at 6:45 P.M., Sarabia Manor Hotel. See you there!
