Treñas: Probe cops, brgy officials linked to drugs
Officials of the Police Regional Office (PRO) 6 under Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas should resolve the issues on the alleged links of several city policemen in the illegal drugs trade. While, barangay captains who coddle suspected illegal drug pushers should be slapped with appropriate cases.
This was the statement of Mayor Jerry Treñas following reports that there are a number of policemen in the city who are in the payroll of drug lords.
He stressed that an immediate solution should be made against the alleged involvement of cops in the illegal drugs trade.
Treñas stressed that the police should find immediate solution to the problem since the proliferation of illegal drugs affects the youth.
On reports involving barangay captains who serve as coddler of suspected illegal drugs suspects, Treñas said appropriate charges should be filed against the barangay officials concerned if evidence warrants. Its not proper for them to get involved in the illegal drugs trade, he said.
The barangay captains are mandated to lead the creation of the Barangay Anti-Drugs Abuse Council (Badac) to wage war against the proliferation and use of illegal drugs in the community.
Treñas noted that in some cases, police also finds it hard to get the support of the barangay officials when they conduct drug operation against a suspected drug pusher.
The chief executive compared the problem on illegal drugs with the problem on solid waste management. He said both problems should be resolved through a community effort with a good leadership from officials.
Treñas admitted that the proliferation of illegal drugs is a "big problem" in the city. (See related story on page 2)
