New car passes for out-of-town PUJs to take effect March 1
The Traffic Management and Engineering Unit (TMEU) will issue some new 800 new car passes to the 39 drivers associations entering the city routes in accordance with the new traffic ordinance in the city. The issuance of the new car passes is expected to eliminate the use of fake ones.
As ordered by City Mayor Jerry Treñas the new car passes will be used starting March 1, 2008.
In his executive order, Treñas emphasized that the new PUJ passes shall be given "without any fee or consideration in whatever form from the federation/association, drivers, operators, cargo owners and association members."
In previous years, the issuance of car passes was met with controversy after some drivers organizations distributed the car passes to its members for a fee. This process caused confusion among the drivers but they have no other alternative but to pay for it to allow them to reach the city's major routes.
The mayor also ordered the TMEU through Senior Inspector Bob Foerster to distribute the car passes to the respective federations or associations having existing permits based on TMEU's records. There will be proper documentation in the release of the new car passes to make sure no drivers organization will use fake car passes to accommodate other PUJ's.
The old car passes will be canceled and ineffective beginning Saturday, March 1, 2008. New car passes features a golden seal of the city and is already laminated. Its printing form differs from the old car passes which could be easily tampered.
Treñas futher ordered the TMEU to furnish the office of Councilor Erwin Plagata, chairman of the committee on transportation, the list those who were given car passes a month after its issuance. The list will provide the committee an idea on the number of vehicles that enters the city in a given day and time.
