Roxas City BJMP moves to new site
Roxas City -- The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Roxas City will soon be transferred to barangay San Jose this City.
Lawyer Soteo Gardose, Capiz BJMP Provincial Administrator, disclosed that they are set to transfer their district jail to San Jose, Roxas City sometime in June after the completion of the perimeter fence of said office.
Gardose said that their national office under the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has already approved and released some P1.4 million for the establishment of the perimeter fence and other needed facilities in said new district office.
He said that with their new jail, prisoners would be given enough area for safekeeping and rehabilitation while women inmates, in particular, would be provided separate jail cells and facilities.
The new site will also answer the problem on overcrowding in the city jail, Gardose stressed.
DILG Secretary Ronaldo Puno said that they are sustaining the jail decongestion and rehabilitation program.
Puno said he has long been urging lawmakers to consider a proposed law establishing integrated jail facilities in Metro Manila and other highly urbanized cities to address the perennial problem on overcrowding in city and municipal jails.
In line with the rehabilitation program, Gardose said that their inmates have been recipients of the Adopt-a-Jail Project, courtesy of the various non-government, civic and religious groups.
He said that the Roxas City BJMP has about136 inmates as of February this year, receiving various services like medical, sports development and livelihood training.
Last year, the BJMP reported that 1,072 jails with an aggregate inmate population of 26,012 became recipients of the Adopt-a-Jail Project that mobilizes community-based support groups and individuals in providing efficient and effective jail services, Secretary Puno revealed.
He added that rehabilitation programs such as livelihood programs, educational/vocational trainings, recreational and sports activities, religious activities, medical and dental activities and counseling and therapeutic community services were provided to a monthly average number of 45,717 inmates."
