Ex-army killed in an ambush
An ex-army and also a former candidate for board member in the second district of Iloilo died in an ambush early morning yesterday by suspected members of the New Peoples Army along the Freedom Highway, Poblacion in the town of Alimodian.
Police identified the fatality as Regie Alcobilla, 45 years old and resident of Barangay Balabago, Alimodian, Iloilo. Alcobilla's body was riddled with bullets of armalite rifle. Initial reports said, he succumbed from 15 gunshot wounds.
Alcobilla was on his way home from a wake when waylaid by suspected members of the New Peoples Army, the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) at about 12:10 am Tuesday.
Police has yet to determine on what group could have possibly initiated the ambush that led to Alcobilla's death.
Senior Inspector Abner Perces Balgos, chief of police of the Alimodian police station, theorized the ambush was perpetrated by the insurgents because of the high caliber of firearms used in killing the victim.
It could not be ascertained on whether Alcobilla's death is related to politics. He ran in May 2007 for provincial board in the second district of Iloilo but lost.
As of press time, no other details on Alcobilla's death was released. While, the New Peoples Army operating in the hinterlands of Alimodian, Leon and San Miguel (Aleosan) has yet to make any statement that would confirm their participation on Alcobilla's death.
