LGU actions vs water scarcity urged
As the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) kicks off its nationwide Earth Caravan this week, it is also urging local government units to work on basic steps to conserve water and protect their water sources.
Regional Executive Director for DENR 6 Research and Extension Services Dr. Alice Lustica said though it may seem not alarming for some communities, time will come that water resources will dry up, hence, actions from the local officials are needed today.
Lustica said proper use of water comes with the consciousness that the resources can run out and people will suffer.
The basic steps can include implementation of sound solid waste management from community level, proper tree planting activities with after care of trees, regulating water extraction in their respective areas, and institutionalizing water conservation tips in residences, schools, restaurants and hotels.
Lustica said the People Information caravan undertaken by the DENR is not meant a one-shot activity but something that will spur people to action in their respective turfs, to make water resource conservation and rehabilitation and protection of Mother Earth.
She also said that the caravan is an education process by which the participating sectors and agencies are encouraged to learn from actual experiences and studies of best environmental protection best practices in the region.
Basically, DENR expects that local government units, people organizations and sectors will really be empowered to undertake sustaining actions and continuing education, according to Lustica.
The caravan will stop in various provinces and towns to dialogue with local officials and get their commitment to action. (PIA 6/ESS)
