NPC: 15 generators not only for Iloilo City but entire Panay
The fifteen modular generator sets which the National Power Corporation (NPC) will be renting to address the current power shortage are not only for Iloilo City but for the the entire Panay island.
This was learned yesterday from NPC President Cyril del Callar who was in the city for the energy summit.
Del Callar said the generator sets will be stationed in Panit-an, Capiz.
Del Callar said a team of engineers already inspected the site where the 15 generator sets will be placed. Each generator set has a capacity of one megawatt.
Del Callar's announcement surprised the media as it was earlier reported that the 15 generator sets will be used to augment the power needs of the city.
News about the renting of generator sets came out after a meeting with City Mayor Jerry Treñas and representatives from NPC and National Transmission Corporation (Transco).
Del Callar clarified that the 15 generator sets will be used for the entire Panay island and not for Iloilo City alone.
He also said that the lease is only good for six months and not one year as earlier reported.
"It is the fastest but most expensive option," he said referring to the renting of generator sets to addres the current power situation.
Del Callar said NPC will spend some P15 million in the lease as well as the diesel requirements of the generator sets.
The NPC will lease additional gensets to produce another 15 megawatts of power in the third quarter and until December 2008 to reach 45 megawatts to energize Panay, he said.
Del Callar said they are also trying to look for possibilities to have the gensets stationed in Iloilo since there are two power barges in the city. The gensets should be close to the power sub-station, said Del Callar.
