Campaign underway to make Iloilo a 'major IT hub'
The Iloilo Federation for Information Technology (I FIT) is bent in making this city and province as the center of information technology (IT) in the Visayas area.
"Iloilo is embarking on an aggressive campaign to be a major IT hub," said I FIT Chairman and University of the Philippines in the Visayas Chancellor Glenn Aguilar.
I FIT is a multi-sector organization formed in March 2006 composed of members from the academe and training institutions, industry and business, and the government.
Their aim is to attract investors in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) and promote Iloilo as ICT destination.
Aguilar said as part of I FIT's campaign and initial activity for the year, they are launching the third "IT Week" on June 24-27.
"The project is organized to highlight the capability of Iloilo as one of the productive IT hubs in the country because of its excellent human resource talents," he stated.
As the region's center of learning and education, Iloilo is home to premier state universities like the U.P. in the Visayas and West Visayas State University that produce qualified graduates to work in the ICT sector.
Through the conduct of IT Week, I FIT aims to raise the awareness of Ilonggos on the latest trends and development in the IT industry – its products, services and businesses in the global market.
Aguilar revealed a lot of plans are being made for the big event in June such as motorcade, investment forum, exhibits, lectures, competitions and jobs fair.
The activities are in collaboration with the Iloilo city and provincial governments, Department of Trade and Industry, educational institutions, national government agencies, and existing IT industry involved in the development of the IT sector. (PNA)
