Only 40 barangays placed under state of calamity
The Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) declared only 40 of the city's barangays under the state of calamity. Three of the barangays included in the list of affected barangays were rejected by the legislative body for insufficient grounds.
In its last Friday's special session, the SP declared as under state of calamity 29 barangays in Jaro district, five in Mandurriao, four in Lapaz and two in Arevalo. Said barangays were hit by floods due to continuous rains brought by tropical depression "Cosme". Around 8,000 families or 40,000 individuals were affected by floods. Food stuff were given to the affected families.
However, the recommendation made by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) head Claire Dignadice failed to convince the legislative body to declare barangays Rizal-Ibarra, Rizal Estanzuela, both in the City Proper, and Banuyao in Lapaz under the state of calamity.
The council was not at all convinced that the damages incurred in said barangays could justify its declaration as under the state of calamity.
The special session was called by Mayor Jerry Treñas to declare the city under the state of calamity.
