Preparations for 110thIndependence Day in high gear
The city and provincial governments of Iloilo and the Regional Association of National Government Executives VI (Range VI) gear up preparations for the 110thIndependence Day celebration on June 12, expected to be bigger and more grandiose than in the previous years.
Last March 25, 2008, a joint Executive Order was signed by Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas and Governor Niel Tupas creating an executive committee tasked to ensure the success of the celebration.
Range VI President Atty. Janet Mesa, who vice-chairs the Iloilo 2008 Independence Day Executive Committee disclosed that series of meetings have been conducted involving officials of the different committees to organize the various activities that will mark the celebration and ensure maximum participation of the community.
Mesa said the cooperation of civic and military organizations, universities and colleges, other non-government organizations, business sector, academe and media were also elicited for the celebration.
Military and civic parades that will pass the city's major thoroughfares are among the highlights of the local celebration. Floats depicting the different phases of our national life sponsored by various agencies are also expected to add color to the parade. A short program is set to open the parade where Sta. Barbara's Tribu Kahilwayan, CPU's Bahandi and John B. Lacson's Silent Drill were invited to perform.
"The celebration of Independence Day is one event that not only makes us proud to be Filipinos but it also calls to mind the heroic struggle and courage of all those who fought long and hard for the freedom we enjoy today," said Mesa.
The Independence Day celebration in the city will be held on June 12. It will be recalled that Malacanang has moved the celebration of the holiday from June 12 to June 9, nationwide. (PIA)
