State university brings tertiary education to Capiz town.
ROXAS CITY -- Students from Jamindan, Capiz may no longer need to leave their hometown to acquire a college education as the province's lone state university is bringing it to them starting this coming which opens in June.
The municipal government of Jamindan and Capiz State University (CAPSU) will sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on May 30, 2008 to officially mark the establishment and launching of an extension campus of the state university in the said municipality.
Jamindan Mayor Ethel Jinon and CAPSU President Dr. Rochellir Dadivas will sign the agreement. The chief municipal executive has invited Capiz Second District Congressman Fredenil H. Castro to grace the occasion.
Other officials of the municipality including the Sangguniang Bayan led by Vice Mayor Samson Montorio and those from CAPSU will witness the MOA signing to be held at the town's gymnasium.
The extension campus belongs to the unit of CAPSU in Burias, Mambusao, Capiz headed by Chancellor Dr. Genoveva Labaniego. The extension school brings to 11 the number of CAPSU campuses in the province, which has a main campus in this capital city.
The state university is committed to primarily provide advanced instruction and professional training in agriculture, fishery and forestry, science and technology, arts and humanities, education and other related fields. It also undertakes research, extension services and production activities and provides progressive leadership in its areas of specialization.
Heeding the directive of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, CAPSU has deferred its planned tuition fee increase for incoming college freshmen this year to help them and their parents cope with the rising cost of living brought about by the global rise in oil and food prices.
President Arroyo said that the freeze on tuition fees would greatly help ease the financial burden of students and their parents.
The President's directive was for the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) to freeze all tuition fee increases in the 110 state-run colleges and universities as well as in private tertiary institutions nationwide this year. (PIA-JSC)
