Groups urged to support BJMP livelihood projects
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has asked business groups and non-government organizations to support the agency's plan to transform the jail into an income generating center.
BJMP provincial jail warden Supt. Joel Superficial said the inmates are venturing into various income generating projects such as making home decors and furniture using recyclable materials.
However, Superficial said that aside from the annual National Correctional Month where they can showcase and sell their products, the inmates have no fixed market for their outputs.
Rev. Fr. Nestor Caber, the regional chaplain of the BJMP, said it would be better if there are companies that can hire the services of the inmates or willing to market the inmates' products.
"It is my dream to transform jails into income generating centers, and provide jobs that are fitted for inmates and within the jail vicinity. I am inviting the public to join us in this advocacy," he said.
The plan to transform the jail into an income generating center aims to "help people inside the jail and bring back their dignity," according to Caber.
Superficial also appealed to the public to provide the inmates with recyclable materials since the BJMP do not have enough funds to provide the materials. (PNA)
