2 Iloilo City schools receive donations from Guam
In their effort to help the Ilonggo students, the Filipino Students Association of Agueda I Johnston Middle School in Guam recently donated an audio visual equipment, laptop computer and overhead projector to two beneficiary public schools in the city.
The Iloilo Central Elementary School and the Iloilo City National High School are the chosen recipients of the Adopt-a-Hometown School Project of the Filipino Students Association of Agueda I Johnston Middle School's goodwill trip in Iloilo City which started last June 3 and will end on June 10, 2008.
The group headed by Sammy Ladrido, an Ilongga also donated books, toys, toiletries, canned goods, clothing and financial donation to Bantay Bata 163 of ABS-CBN Foundation. The foundation serves the need of neglected and abused children. Nine students and seven faculties and staff of the school joined in the goodwill trip.
The donations were raised after the group's series of fund-raising activities such as car wash, Mother's Day Flower Sale, raffle draws and End of the Year School Dance. Since last year, the group is persistent in coming up with enough funds to buy the equipment for their donations.
Councilor Julienne Baronda, chair of the committee on education, women and family relation of the Sangguniang Panlungsod, said the donation will be very useful to the recipient schools. The effort of the Ilonggos staying abroad in helping the public elementary and high school is a notable work.
It was Baronda who initiated the goodwill trip of the Filipino students in the city. She, is also working for more donations from different Filipino organizations abroad for possible donations for the various public elementary and high school.
Baronda said the children exerted efforts by doing car washing works just to bring home something in Iloilo City. The action is worthy to be emulated by different groups or associations outside the country that wish to extend help by donating equipment to the different schools.
There are organizations that are very much willing to help in the education program of the Ilonggos and it only needs time and effort to establish contact with them, said Baronda.
Other than doing charity works, they also visited the office of Mayor Jerry Treñas. Their itineraries included a visit to Miag-ao church, island-province of Guimaras to enjoy beautiful beaches and have a taste of Guimaras mangoes. They are also longing to taste the Ilonggo foods and delicacies.
