City government adopts energy saving measures
The city government will be adopting energy conservation measures in order to mitigate the impact of the continuous increase in the price of fuel.
City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the move is in line with the call of President Arroyo on all government offices to save on energy consumption.
Treñas said the energy saving measures to be implemented by city offices are the alternate use of double-arm streetlights, conversion of gasoline vehicles into auto-LPG, limited use of air-conditioning units and lights and use of energy saving bulbs.
"We have to look for ways to save now because of the drastic increase in prices of gasoline. I have instructed our city electricians for the alternate use of streetlights after 9:30 or 10:00 in the evening," the mayor said.
The city is spending some P7 million for its monthly electric bill, but Treñas is hopeful that it will decrease significantly once the alternate use of streetlights will be implemented.
Initially, the city will start with streetlights at the General Luna and Diversion Road.
Energy saving bulbs will also be installed in barangay halls, health centers and covered gymnasiums to reduce power consumption.
The City Environment and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) and the City Engineers Office (CEO), on the other hand, have already volunteered for the conversion of their vehicle engines into auto-LPG.
Other city-owned vehicles will follow as the price of auto-gas fuel is much lower compared with that of gasoline and diesel.
The chief executive said the city government should set as an example to city residents in conserving energy. After a month, the city will review the energy conservation measures to see the reduction in city's electrical bills.
Meantime, the Task Force Boltahe is running after those unscrupulous individuals who have illegal electrical connections attached on the street lights, barangay halls, health centers and gymnasiums.
"I will be coming up with another executive order on how to further save," he said. (With a report from PNA)
