Circular on teacher's six-hour daily work out soon
Education Undersecretary Ramon C. Bacani Tuesday said it is issuing a circular over a petition of public school teachers to perform just six hours of work daily.
The teachers have complained that their daily work grind is too heavy for underpaid civil servants and that they deserve better treatment.
According to Bacani, the issue raised will be considered in the light of a 40-hour week requirement of the Civil Service Commission.
The nature of a teacher's workload in the six-hour daily shift proposed must equate to 40 hours total in a week, he said.
Aside from actual classroom instruction, teachers double as administrative workers, sports coaches, drama or elocution and contests, and even chaperons in intra-school competitions.
It is a known fact that many developed work-related diseases, such as pneumonia and tuberculosis, because of long nights and days looking after students, their lesson guides and even the school itself.
Teachers said if they cannot be commensurated with cash pay, their work load should be enlightened instead.
An average teacher earns about P10,000 in gross pay. (PNA)
