The need for education
June 10 marked the first day of school for most educational institutions; private or public. Though Philippines is suffering from the never-ending oil, electricity and political problems, this crisis won't hinder the opening the school year 2008-2009.
It has always been said that the youth of today is the future of the land. But how important education really is? To know the stand of the young on how important education really is, I would like to share the article of my former student; Denise Patricia Granada entitled "The Need for education."
Education is one of the most important gifts that parents can give to their children. Through education many people become successful in their lives – doctors, engineers, nurses, teachers, politicians, scientists, etc. Life became easier for all of us because of education. The quantum leap in technology like in computers, communications, diagnostic apparatuses in the medical world, and transportations were achieved through education. Man was able to travel in space and walk on the moon because of education. Education provides us the knowledge that we need to run a company or a factory; how to build bridges or buildings; how to solve difficult problems; how to cure people; or how to run our life and family.
Yet, there are some children who don't give education the slightest importance. Some children think that since their parents are rich they don't need to study hard or study at all. They think that their parents' wealth will be the easy road for them. No! They are wrong. How can they take care of their parents' wealth if they don't know how to invest it? How can they run their parents' businesses if they have no education?
There are also some children who came from poor families who don't study hard because they think that since they are poor they have no chance of making good in their lives. But of course, they are wrong. As log as we strive hard in our studies, we have the chance of being successful in our life. Nothing is impossible here on earth.
Sometimes we wonder why some students perform better than other students and still enjoy their social life. All of this is just a matter of self-discipline. If we prioritize education, then we must spend more time reading or studying our lessons. We must avoid spending too much time watching TV, playing computers, or texting on the cell phone. A little sacrifice on our part will entice discipline among us. Why not just spend a few hours on weekends watching TV, playing computers, or texting your friends and spend more time studying? All of us may not be in the honor list but aren't you glad that you make your parents happy when they see you having good grades? Don't you know how proud and happy your parents will be when you graduate from college and have a degree? And don't you know that the little sacrifice you have made will richly reward you in the future? Remember that having a good education will not only benefit you and your family but also your community as well. Just do your part as a student and it will be worth it someday. Remember that the knowledge we gain through education cannot be stolen from us and we can take it anywhere we go. You'll see.
Acquiring education is a matter of choice. If you choose to be educated and you think that it would be the best for you, go ahead. In the end, you will reap the fruits of your hard work in the near future.
