Suspect in shooting of Swede yields
The suspect in the shooting of a Swedish national in Sitio Casulman, Brgy. Oracon, Sibunag, Guimaras last Tuesday voluntarily surrendered to authorities yesterday.
Jines Publico y Gallano, 25 years old, also a resident of Sitio Casulman, said he surrendered for fear that the family of the Swede's wife would retaliate against his kin.
Publico admitted shooting Per Ake Heideman y Hansson, 52 years old, who is still under treatment at the Iloilo Saint Paul Hospital.
Publico, who was presented yesterday by Guimaras Provincial Police director Senior Supt. Leo Puertollano to Police Regional Office director Chief Supt. Isagani Cuevas, said he shot Heideman with his cal. 357 revolver following a heated altercation.
Publico said the Swede, who was drunk at the time, challenged him to a fight.
Heideman carrying a baseball bat allegedly went to Publico's house and destroyed their door prompting him to shoot the victim.
Publico immediately fled after the shooting.
Publico said Heideman had been harassing him and his family ever since they refused to sign the document for the sale of their two-hectare property.
Heideman had been staying in Guimaras for about 12 years having married to a Filipina.
He reportedly bought a vast property in Brgy. Oracon which include the property owned by the family of Publico.
Publico said he was informed by his brothers that several unidentified persons had been surveying their house while he was hiding.
Publico said he is ready to face the consequences of his act.
Meanwhile, a police record from Guimaras PNP stated that Publico shot Heideman several times while the latter was having a walk along the road around 4:30 p.m.
Heideman's wife Julie even heard the gunshots and saw Publico flee after shooting her husband.
