MIWD service waters not safe for drinking yet
Consumers of Metro Iloilo Water District (MIWD) are advised to boil the water coming from their faucets pending the result of the laboratory tests for its potability. The advisory came after the water district has completed the repair works on the damaged pipeline in Brgy. Amerang, Cabatuan eventually providing 70 percent of the city's water needs.
Mayor Jerry Treñas said consumers have to wait for the laboratory result on the water's potability. The water coming out from the faucets is turbid and not yet safe for drinking. Drinking unsafe water may cause water borne diseases.
In Iloilo City, MIWD consumers can still avail of free drinking water at the MIWD compound everyday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m., and at the Lapaz plaza. The water district also provides immediate water drinking needs in the plazas of Pavia and Cabatuan, where MIWD-assisted mobile water treatment plants are situated.
Treñas issued the advisory after the water district announced the complete repair of the pipeline connecting the water supply from the town of Maasin to the MIWD reservoir in Sta. Barbara.
However, the normal pressure of water supply in the whole service area could be achieved in two to three days from the activation of these pipelines.
Treñas said the restoration of the water pipelines will help address the water needs of the city. It lessens the stress on the city's problems on the water needs of the affected residents.
The water could be used in household needs such as washing, bathing and cleaning purposes. There are still households that need to be cleaned of mud and other debris from the flash floods. Affected families complained of the bad smell and dust produced out of the mud.
The mayor added they will transfer the water treatment facilities in other areas as soon as the MIWD assured the potability of the water coming from its pipeline. The water treatment plants will be stationed in areas that MIWD supply is not available.
The city has mobile water treatment plant from Manila Waters and one water purification plant provided by the Spanish government.
