Pacquiao here today to give aid to typhoon victims
Thousands of Ilonggos including typhoon victims are expected to welcome Filipino boxing icon Manny Pacquiao who will be here today to distribute assistance for flood victims in this city.
Pacquiao is set to arrive around 7:15 at the Iloilo airport in Cabatuan town, said Lilia Recto, one of the key organizers of his trip.
Pacquiao is set to have breakfast with Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo at the prelate's residence in Jaro District before handing out relief goods to flood victims at the compound of the Jaro Cathedral.
Msgr. Meliton Oso, executive director of the Jaro Archdiocese Social Action Center, said at least 700 flood victims will receive the relief goods from Pacquiao.
Pacquiao earlier promised to donate P3 million from his earnings to flood victims after he knocked out David Diaz last month.
The boxing champion, reportedly, will give P1.5 million for typhoon victims in Iloilo City, P1 million for typhoon victims in Bacolod City and P500,000 for Aklan typhoon victims.
Recto, president of the Catholic Women's League here, said Pacquiao had requested that the recipients will be identified by the Church.
While disaster-weary Ilonggos are excited to see and meet the boxing champion, Recto said Pacquiao wanted his visit to be "simple" and focus only on the giving out of relief goods.
Pacquiao is expected to leave after lunch by chopper to Bacolod City where he will also hand out relief goods.
Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas said the city will welcome the boxing champion and will provide security for his trip.
"This is a big help for our residents not just materially but to boost their morale after the tragedy," the mayor said in a telephone interview.
